Quantum Shift is a story driven game about a young girl named Ashley and her family.
Ashley's father is a cold, unloving man, who lives only for his work. He stays in his lab for weeks without speaking to anyone, and when he does come back to the house, he argues with her mother, shouting something about trying to save someone.
He never speaks a word to Ashley...
Why is he like this? What is more important to him than his family? Who is he trying to save?
The game begins on Ashleys 20th birthday, she sneaks out at night, determined to find out the mystery's surrounding her father. She finds her way into her fathers secret lab. Hidden inside the lab is a time machine. She finds a way to activate it and the secrets of her fathers past begins to unravel...
An exciting plot with multiple endings! Making choices throughout the game will effect what happens in the future!
Below are some work in progress screenshots:
I hope you look forward to discovering the past along with Ashley.
All going well, a demo will be released by the end of the week!
For those of you who don't know, the Retron 5 is the latest, soon to be released retro console by Hyperkin. They previously made the Retron 1, 2 and 3. They are skipping 4 and moving straight onto 5, which will play an impressive 10 consoles in 1 (or 12 if you count PAL and NTSC versions and Master System games using a power base converter to play them through the Mega Drive port.)!
The main selling point for me is not that it plays all these consoles, I can already play the games on their original systems. What this does which they don't, is it has the ability to up-scale into 720p HD. This is a very important factor considering how blurry the old consoles look on new TV's. It also allows you to speed up games, so games made in 50Hz can be sped up to how they should be! As well as that you can also change the resolution from 4:3 to 16:9 and apply many different screen filters. It also allows users to install translated patches for games and run them using the actual cart which will help greatly with some games I plan on importing from Japan later in the year!
Here's my top pick of one game from each system that I am most looking forward to playing again on the Retron 5!
NES
Faxanadu
Thanks to the Retron 5's ability to use save states I might actually be able to complete this game! Recently purchased from Shogun, this looks to be a huge NES adventure, brilliant art work in the manual, but that's as much of the game as I have seen... Saving this one for the Retron!
Famicom
???
I don't currently own any Famicom games, but hopefully, when I visit Japan later in the year I can pick some up from one of the many amazing retro game shops! If anyone knows any around Tokyo or Osaka / Kyoto areas let me know! Hopefully I'll get lots of games and photos from there so I can make a blog post of my experience there!
SNES
Donkey Kong Country 2
Well, the whole series, but as I said only 1 game per system, DKC 2 would be my favourite of the three. After playing the new Tropical Freeze I feel like going back and playing the originals! By using the screen filters, hopefully the came could look a little less pixelated, which was never a problem using CRT screens, but I find playing this game on a flat screen really shows the pre-rendered characters and environments badly.
Super Famicom
Ys 3: Wanderers from Ys
Got this game from an Expo a while ago, and, although my SNES has been modded to accept Japanese games, there is still the problem of a language barrier, Finally, I will be able to play this in English thanks to the translations patches!
Mega Drive / Genesis
ThunderForce IV
Another game recently bought, my MegaDrive is having some problems with the screen flickering and the sound being a bit messed up, so playing this on the Retron would eliminate those problems and i could enjoy the game without faults! Looking forward to playing this properly, ThunderForce III is one of my favourite shooters ever and apparently this one is even better!
Master System
The NewZeland Story
This is a game that I've had lying around for a long time but never really sat down and played, should be a fun little arcade style game if Taito's other games of the time are anything to go by!
GBA
SigmaStar Saga
A recent addition to my GBA collection, and quite a unique game, mixing RPG style exploration with space ship action sequences and on foot combat! I've been playing this on the SP and on Gameboy player, although Hyperkin have yet to show any GBA gameplay, I hope it will be clearer than on the Gamecube so I can continue to enjoy this fun RPG / Shooter on the big screen!
GBC
Dragon Warrior Monsters 2
Too many times have I started playing this game, only to give up a few hours later, then try to start it up again a few months after, only to realise i have completely forgotten what I was doing! Hopefully having the Retron will give me the push i need to keep playing this game through to completion! The first Dragon Warrior Monsters game is one of my favourites on the original Gameboy so I have high hopes for the rest of this game!
GB
Megaman IV
After completing Megaman III (you can watch a lets play of the whole thing here ) I purchased Megaman IV on the Gameboy to play next, but have yet to get round to it. When the Retron finally arrives it will be the perfect time to play this entry in the Megaman series, maybe even record another Lets Play for Youtube!
Thanks for reading, if you want more info on the Retron 5 check out the official site here, or search Google to find many reviews / previews of the console!
Happy new year everyone. This is not necessarily a list of games I think will be released, but games that I would like to see this year for WiiU and 3DS!
1. New Star Fox Adventures game for WiiU!
Not an obvious choice for a starfox sequel, im sure a lot of people would prefer to have a new Lylat Wars or SNES Starwing remake. but my personal favourite in the Star Fox franchise was SFA. A new one could have even bigger environments, better graphics and if Nintendo worked hard they could have new flying sections, similar to the arcade sections of Star Fox Assault on the Gamecube. I'd love the chance to explore another planet with Fox, Krystal, Prince Tricky and the rest of the SFA team!
Stunning Graphics for the time, The WiiU could show that it is also capable of amazing graphics!
2. F-Zero for 3DS.
I love having Maximum velocity on the 3DS virtual console, but a new F-Zero game in full 3D would be amazing, the graphics could rival F-Zero GX and also be in 3D which would create an even bigger sense of speed as you're racing down twisting courses battling against 30 other racers at the same time. The last F-Zero game was a Japan only release, F-Zero Climax. It's about time that Nintendo (or Namco or Sega) released a new entry in the series!
Imagine this in 3D!
3. SNES REMIX!
After nintendo released the fun NES Remix for WiiU, they could do the same for snes, using games such as Super Mario World, Super Metroid, F-Zero and even Mario Paint (it would work great on the touch screen!) Just make it a bit harder and let you play the full games as well and it would be amazing! With Miiverse integration, the games could all have unique and fun challenges and revive one of the best era's in gaming for a new generation to enjoy. just please nintendo... no more "Helpful" things like this...
Oh, you're meant to run to the RIGHT?
4. Banjo Threeie!
I know this one is never going to happen but i can dream! There might be a small chance of it appearing on the XB1 though but probably not. RIP RARE.
5. Megaman 11!
With Comcept making Mighty No.9 its up to capcom to show they can still make megaman games, instead of spending ages creating deep complex games such as Megaman Universe and Legends, they should focus on the basics and make a new 8-bit title, they already have the framework and i'm sure it would get lots of support from the fans! no more stupid IOS games please Capcom!!
Megaman 10, simple, fun and just what the fans wanted!
6. Kuririn 4!
Or maybe Virtual console releases of the GBA ones. Kuririn is a great franchise that not many people know about, whether a new entry in the series similar to Kururin Squash on the Gamecube, or VC re-releases of the GBA ones, would be a great way to introduce new payers to the excellent, addictive puzzle series!
A lost franchise for Nintendo, it deserves a comeback!
7. Sequel to Kid Icarus Uprising.
Although this will probably not happen for a good few years yet, as Sakurai is hard at work on Smash Bros, I would love to see a full sequel to the amazing 3DS game on the WiiU, with even more amazing graphics and locations it could be something special and an excellent new game to add to the WiiU's growing library of first party titles!
one of the best games on 3DS! A sequel would be much appreciated!
8. Advance Wars 3DS!
After getting a new Fire Emblem last year, many people asked the question, which is a better strategy game on Nintendo, Advance Wars or Fire Emblem, With the release of a new Advance Wars game, people who enjoyed the new Fire Emblem can play it and make their decision. After two amazing DS releases it makes sense for Intelligent Systems to create a new one for 3DS! and as one of my favourite hand-held series I would love to see a new game!
Classics on both GBA and DS, a 3DS entry would be great!
9. UK Release of Time Travelers for 3DS.
A game i have been excited about for a long time, and its been out in japan for a while now. As one of the first games to be shown for the 3DS, I was excited for a long time about this game, I love time travel stories and this would be the perfect 3DS game for me, hopefully Level 5 will bring the game out here soon! They are doing quite well for releasing japanese games over here with the Guild 01 titles being released recently on the eShop.
Big, story driven games are hard to come by on 3DS, this would fill the gap nicely!
10. Diddy Kong Racing 2 for WiiU and 3DS!
Ok, this one is a long shot, but as Nintendo still owns the rights to Diddy Kong, (Not RARE) These is a (smaaaallll) chance that this could happen one day, as one of my favourite kart racers of all time, I love the thought of having a whole new racing adventure with a proper single player mode, challenges and collectables! Sure Mario Kart 8 will be amazing, but Mario Kart has always felt like something is lacking compared to Diddy Kong Racing, Maybe it was the adventure mode, Maybe the amazing music by the legendary David Wise, or maybe it was the fact that DKR has not just karts, but Planes and Hovercrafts as well! Add some online play and connectivity to the 3DS game and it could be the best Kart Racer ever! The closest we ever got to seeing a sequel was the cancelled gamecube game, Donkey Kong Racing.
Donkey Kong Racing looked amazing, heres hoping for a release on the WiiU!...
Thanks for reading, what games would you guys like to see in the coming year?
After many years of wanting to get one I finally found a TurboGrafx-16 at the MCM expo in Birmingham! It was a sealed console and came with the pack in game, Blazing Lazers, and a sealed copy of Pac-Land, which I don't plan on opening as I've not heard very good things about it. If anyone wants to trade for a different game then send me a message.
Probably a lot of readers won't know very much, or anything about the TurboGrafx, so I will quickly explain a bit about it. The TurboGrafx, named PC-Engine in Japan is a console created by NEC. The system only had a very small release in the UK by Telegames. There was no full scale PAL release which makes it very hard to find. In America the system was more successful. The main format of games for the system are HU cards, which are small cards, about the size of a credit card. There was a CD add-on which allows you to run Turbo CD and Super CD games. To run the Turbo and Super CD games you needed to have an additional HU Card which slots into the system to give it more memory. Later on in the systems life there were many different versions released which combined the standard Turbo Grafx / PC-Engine and the CD add-ons. The best of these was the Turbo Duo which had extra memory and combined the Super CD, HU card and the improvements of the super system 3 HU card expansion.
You can see the difference here between the US and Japanese versions of the console. the Japanese console is much smaller and, in my opinion, a much better design. Both have expansion ports on the back for attaching their CD units. Both systems had several re-designs which did not sell very well, making them very sought after by collectors.
The system was originally designed to compete with the NES and Mastersystem, but due to the timing of its release it was actually more in competition with the MegaDrive / Genesis and Super Nintendo. Thankfully, the console, although actually only using an 8-Bit processor, was capable of similar graphics to the SNES and MD, and actually out performed the SNES in terms of speed, making most shooting games perform a lot smoother on the TurboGrafx.
So its all a bit confusing, and these days, quite expensive, to be able to play all the games available for the Turbo Grafx. For this post I will be focusing only on games that were made for the HU card.
These are some games I hope to get in the future for the system!
Bomberman 93 / 94
Parodius
Detana Twinbee
Neutopia
Parasol Stars
Dragons Curse
Super Star Soldier
Maybe one day I can get a CD unit or a combo system and look into getting some CD games, but for now there's plenty for me to enjoy and collect!
A great place to look for TurboGrafx game reviews / opinions is the Youtube channel Spida1a, he is attempting to review every single TurboGrafx game released in the US. There are many in depth video's for every game. check the channel out here http://www.youtube.com/user/spida1a
Classic Japanese Side-Scrolling Action... TRANSFORMED!
Many of you may have heard of the game "Mighty No.9" Which was announced a few weeks ago at PAX. The kickstarter has been online for nearly two weeks and already has more than double its original target!
A new game in the traditional MegaMan style! I was very excited when I heard about it and, of course, I have backed the project. The reaction that Keiji Inafune was thinking of creating a new 2D platformer was amazing at the event in PAX, you can see here just how excited everyone was to hear about it! Skip to 27:00 to see the announcement.
So, Who is Keiji Inafune and why is his new game so important?
Keiji Inafune is one of the most important Japanese Video Game Developers, Since the 8-Bit era he has been creating games. Since graduating school, he immediately went to work for Capcom as an illustrator for a new series, Street Fighter. From there he went onto create a new game, which would go onto become one of the most loved gaming franchises of all time, MegaMan. As well as this, he also made, Dead Rising, Onimusha, Lost Planet and more. In 2010 he left Capcom to set up his own studio, Comcept. So far in this new studio he has made a few games, Soul Sacrifice for the Vita, Bugs Vs Tanks (Part of Guild 02) for the 3DS and is currently working on Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z for PS3 and Xbox 360. Oh, he is also a spaceship in the new Hyperdimension Neptunia V...
Of course, I'm most interested in MegaMan. Being a fan of the series all my life, If you read my post "How a nintendo fan came to be." then you will know that MegaMan 4 was one of the first games I ever played and left a lasting impression on me ever since. The classic 8-Bit series is one of my favourite series ever, and the X games are amazing too... Well they were up to X4. I haven't played many after that point but by that point in the series Inafune was no longer in charge of the development. The X series was actually meant to end at the 4th installment. For me, the MegaMan side scrolling games are some of the best examples of 2D platforming at its purest, good level design, hard enemies and bosses, fun weapon powerups, great music. Everything you could want from an action platformer. There were also some RPG series, Legends, Battle Network and Starforce, all three were well received and got several sequels each.
Mighty No.9 looks set to offer the great platforming style of the MegaMan games, and add brand new ideas and a new graphic style to make what hopefully, will be Inafune's new platforming series! Known for its unique, colourful art style, MegaMan has many characters, each one colourful and unique and has a name relating to music, Rock (Named MegaMan outside of Japan) , Roll, Bass, Tron Bonne Etc.
MegaMan
(Legends Version)
Roll
(Battle Network Version)
Mighty No.9 seems to be continuing this trend of having names which all relate to each other, the the moment, only the main character, Beck and his assistant(?) Call have been announced, but you can see how they fit together which i think is very clever and i hope the names of the other characters are this creative as well!
The art style is very similar to the MegaMan series, which is a good thing. I love the new designs, and the best thing is, there will be polls in the MN.9 community to help decide the final versions of the characters!
some of the ideas for Call
Before this, there was another community driven project, Megaman Legends 3. The project sadly got cancelled, upsetting many fans, and since then Capcom have cancelled many more Megaman games as well, including the online game Rockman Online, Megaman Universe (Which was set to have a full level editor and the ability to download and play user created levels!)And even an FPS game, Maveric Hunter, which was being developed by some of the team who made Metroid Prime!. http://www.polygon.com/2013/4/9/4179628/mega-man-fps-maverick-hunter
After all these cancellations, everyone had given up hope for a new proper MegaMan game, Inafune had left Capcom, and Capcom didn't seem to know what they were doing with the franchise. Sure they released mobile versions of some older games and revealed some on Virtual Console, and the terrible Xover... But it wasn't enough. The only game released for the 25th anniversary was a fan game that Capcom bought the rights to, Street Fighter X MegaMan.
Check out the Kickstarter page for Mighty No.9 for more details. They update regularly with new design ideas and making of videos! Now there is just the long wait until 2015 when the game will be released! http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/mightyno9/mighty-no-9 It only needs a bit more to guarantee a WiiU version so lets make it happen!!
I hope one day Capcom does decide to bring back MegaMan in a new platforming game, but until then, we have Mighty No.9 to look forward to!
